ST. PAUL, March 6, 2018. Today, HF 3320 (Loon) will be heard in the House Education Finance Committee. The bill would authorize schools to use already existing long-term facilities maintenance revenue for school facility safety. The bill gives schools no new funds to improve safety and does nothing to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
House DFL Leader Melissa Hortman released the following statement:
“Minnesotans want action to prevent senseless gun violence—not just in schools, but in movie theatres, concerts, places of worship, and in their communities. Fortifying our schools won’t prevent the next shooting, and will do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
“Other states are taking meaningful action to pass common-sense gun safety measures. Republicans in Minnesota are so far blocking progress to keep Minnesotans safe.”
Last week, House Republicans tabled two measures to help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people – HF 1669 to expand Criminal Background Checks to all gun purchases, and HF 1605 to allow for Gun Violence Protective Orders.
