About Melissa

Melissa Hortman is a lifelong resident of the northern suburbs, a mother, a volunteer, and a small business person.

Melissa and her family.

Melissa grew up in Spring Lake Park and Andover. She graduated from Blaine High School in 1988 after taking advantage of the Post Secondary Concurrent Enrollment Option (PSEO) created by Governor Perpich, by attending college at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus during her senior year. Like many students in PSEO today, she completed her senior year of high school and freshman year of college simultaneously. This experience led her to become a strong proponent of innovative public school choice for students and parents.

She graduated from college at Boston University and worked for then-Senators Al Gore and John Kerry before returning to Minnesota in 1992 to start law school. She and her husband Mark bought their first house on Windsor Terrace in Brooklyn Park, the street they still live on today. Melissa and Mark are proud parents of two children. Their son Colin is studying at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and their daughter Sophie is attending the University of Colorado Boulder.

Melissa has long been a volunteer in her community: she balanced her law practice with time at Monroe Elementary School as a volunteer, member of Monroe’s PTO, and member of the Anoka Hennepin Parent-Legislative Team. Melissa also taught Sunday school at Saint Timothy Catholic Church in Blaine and served as a Girl Scout Leader.

Later Melissa served on the Brooklyn Park Human Relations Commission as well as the Citizen Long Range Improvement Committee, and on the Board of Directors for an Anoka County nonprofit organization.

In 2004, Melissa was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives. She began her service in 2005, and has served in caucus leadership since 2006. Melissa has been particularly active in the areas of transportation, K-12 education funding, higher education, and the environment. Melissa currently serves as the chair of the Energy Policy Committee and speaker pro tempore.
